Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) est un écrivain polonais de langue anglaise. Il prit goût à l'aventure après le décès de son père, lorsqu'il fut placé chez son oncle, et s'engagea dans la marine française d'abord, et dans l'anglaise par la suite. Après le long service, il est promu capitaine, suite à quoi il adopte la nationalité britannique. Le film emblématique «Apocalypse Now» (1979) de Francis Ford Coppola est l’adaptation libre de sa nouvelle «Au cœur des ténèbres» (1899).
