Nach seinem Medizinstudium in Wien begann er bereits früh mit dem Schreiben von Erzählungen und Gedichten. Er galt als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des „Jungen Wien", der literarischen Wiener Moderne, und war ein Kritiker der Österreichisch-Ungarischen Monarchie.
